Phosphorous


Located at Group 15 and Period 3 of the Periodic Table is the element you can find in your pee. This is Phosphorous ( or spelled as Phosphorus ).

First discovered in 1669 by an alchemist called Hennig Brand and first isolated also by the alchemist called Hennig Brand.

Alchemists study Alchemy, and Alchemy is pre - science. Alchemists is always finding a way of turning metals into Gold. Besides, alchemists is also always finding a way of finding a way to have eternal life. Well, Hennig Brand is one of them.

So, Hennig Brand is very convinced that by boiling urine it might change into Gold. So, Brand went to purify urine. In the process of him purifying Urine, he obtained Phosphorous. This is an important discovery because this is the first time someone actually discovered an element not discovered by ancient peoples.

Today, Phosphorous occurs in many forms. Two of the common ones is Red Phosphorous and White Phosphorous.

Red Phosphorous is almost non - reactive, unlike White Phosphorous. Red Phosphorous is used in Safety Matches and Fireworks. Another form is White Phosphorous. White Phosphorous is more reactive than Red Phosphorous. In fact, it needs to be stored in water to prevent it from burning.

Burning Phosphorous

White Phosphorous has been causing accidents once. After Hennig Brand gave away all the Phosphorous he prepared, a scientist went to research everything about Phosphorous. Eventually, he stated that one time his servant phosphorous on top of the scientist's bed one day. Later that night, suddenly, the bed burst into flames.

After a few researches, it was proven by that scientist that White Phosphorous caused the fire on his bed. Since that day, White Phosphorous is considered to be very dangerous.

Phosphorous is considered to be a 11th most common element that exists on Earth's Crust. It is said that Phosphorous has about 1200 parts per million.

Phosphorous can be found in Phosphate Rock. Phosphate Rock contains Calcium and Phosphorous. Phosphate Rock was mined the most in United States.

Phosphorous can also be found in our bodies. In fact, Phosphorous acts as an most essential part of our lives. Phosphorous is needed to provide the energy needed for a cell to move. Phosphorous is also found in our bones. We can gain Phosphorous by eating meat, milk, beans and grains.

However,eating Phosphorous without its compounds is extremely dangerous. Even consuming a small tiny bit of White Phosphorous is enough to cause diarrhea with loss of blood, damage to the liver, stomach, intestines, and circulatory system. If it worsens, swallowing tiny bits of White Phosphorous can also cause coma.

That is swallowing just a tiny bit of White Phosphorous. If consuming White Phosphorous from 50 milligrams to 100 milligrams, it can cause death.

Besides swallowing, holding White Phosphorous is also dangerous as well. If holding White Phosphorous, White Phosphorous can react immediately with air and caught in fire. By getting on fire, our skin will get skin burns.

So, try not to eat White Phosphorous. Don't even think of holding it.

How Phosphorous got its name?
Phosphorous got its name from the Greek Word ' Phosphoros ', meaning ' bringer of the light '. It is named so because of its Glow in the dark properties. The name was given by Henning Brand. Some people still like to call Phosphorous Phosphorus. However, these two names are the same. 

Uses
Phosphorous has many uses, such as making artificial fertilizers for farmers to grow their crops. These artificial fertilizers contains Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium. These three elements are the most critical in order for the plants to grow.

Safety Matches
Besides, Ordinary Wood and Safety Matches are also made of the compounds named Phosphorous Pentasulfide ( P2S5 ) and Phosphorous Sesquisulfide ( P4S3). These compounds acts as a coating for the tip of the match, mainly to let the match burst into flame when the two compounds are scratched.

Another useful compound of Phosphorous is that it is used to make gasoline additives, for manufacturing plastics, fire resistant agent, and even for the manufacture of transistors for electronic devices. This compound is called Phosphorous Oxychloride ( POCI3 ).
